The
Applied Information Sciences Branch
at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center
is heavily involved in technology outreach
and transfer. As part of this activity,
they recognized the need for a highly
intuitive, easily accessible remote
sensing tutorial that hopefully will
serve as a primer for the new user
as well as a teaching tool for the
educational community. They wanted
this tutorial to provide a detailed
understanding of the utility of the
data in light of the fundamental principles
of electromagnetic energy, especially
as they relate to sensor design and
function. |

Remote
Sensing is the science and art of acquiring
information (spectral, spatial, temporal)
about material objects, area, or phenomenon,
without coming into physical contact
with the objects, or area, or phenomenon
under investigation. |

AmericaView
is a consortium to expand remote sensing
education through a network of numerous
state consortia. Remote Sensing is
the study of an object through the
collection of information without being
in physical contact with that object.
This collection of data can be from
aircraft, spacecraft or ship. Scientists
have used remote sensing data and derived
information for studying the various
Earth resources: land, water, air and
the interactions living matter has
with them. With the technology explosion,
access to and uses of remote sensing
data has allowed for immense growth
potential in the industry to educators,
scientists and practically every businessperson. |
