Fall 2007 CReSIS Seminar Series - November 8, 2007 - Polar Robotics Seminar II
On November 8, 2007, Fall Seminar Students attended a lecture given by Dr. Derrick Lampkin of Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Lamkins talk was entitled “Monitoring the Antarctic Ice Shelf Energy Balance using Robotic Rovers” and gave a brief overview of the research he is involved with. He spoke of the need to monitor the weather at specific locations that are not currently covered by the existing Automatic Weather Station (AWS) network. His goal is to have autonomous robots working together to gather meteorological data from varying points around an ice shelf. This involves not only the hardware to gather the information, but the software to guide each robot to its goal and back again safely. This lecture was part of the IEEE-GRSS Distinuished Lecture Series in the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER).
