Dr. Shobha Sriharan is as an Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Virginia State University's (VSU) Department of Agriculture and Human Ecology. Dr. Sriharan is responsible for the introduction of new academic programs: Environmental science (ES) and Geographic Information System (GIS). These programs were developed at VSU as a result of funding from the USDA Capacity Building Teaching Program to VSU. As the project director of the USDA Capacity Building Projects, she has demonstrated leadership in initiating instruction of courses on environmental science and GIS during the academic year for VSU's undergraduates, and pre-college awareness of GIS among the high school students and teachers through intensive summer programs. Dr. Sriharan has successfully enforced the concept of team teaching by the faculty members at partner institutions which include Elizabeth City State University, Delaware State University, and Southern University. She is an integral part of the success of VSU's NIH-BRIDGES to Baccalaureate Program and NIH-Extramural Associates Research Development Award.
