Student Essay: William Curry

My name is William Curry. I am currently and 8 th grader and very interested in participating in the CReSIS Spring 2007 Lecture Series. I know a little about CReSIS, and I hope by attending this series I can learn more and become further involved.

I know that CReSIS stands for: Center for Remote Sensing of Ices Sheets. CReSIS is an educational program that informs its students of ice sheets, global warming, changing climate, and many other studies. Ice sheets are large masses of glacier ice. Today, ice sheets are only found in Antarctica and Greenland. I know that ice sheets are one of the biggest masses of ice. Today, the largest mass is the Antarctic ice sheet which is melting from the effects of global warming. I know that global warming describes the increase in the Earth’s temperatures. Global warming is caused by burning fuels and polluting the atmosphere.

I also know a little about the tools and systems CReSIS uses for their research. Many different systems are used to both map and model different studies. CReSIS also uses satellite images to assist with their research.

Since I don’t know a lot about CReSIS, I would like to participate in the 2007 lecture series. I want to know which specific technologies CReSIS uses, what other things they study, how we can stop global warming, and why our climate is changing. I’m confident that by participating in the series I will find answers to the things I want to learn.

I think that by participating in every CReSIS program available to me, I can get further involved. The more I learn from CReSIS and the more lecture series I attend, maybe one day I could lead my own research for CReSIS. I have great plans for undergraduate and graduate school. I plan to major in Earth and Planetary Sciences.
