ed2The 2008 Earth Day Celebration was held on Tuseday, April 22, in the main lecture room of Lester Hall of Elizabeth City State University. The program started at 9am and ended at 12 noon. The following schools participated in the event:

  • Northeastern High School - 2 teachers and 23 9th grade students
  • Elizabeth City Middle School - 2 teachers and 32 6th grade students
  • River Road Middle School - 1 teacher and 29 8th grade students

ed1Dr. Eric Akers spoke on how remote sensing and robotics were helping to document and collect data on ice sheets. He displayed some web sites the students could go to for more information. Dr. Malcolm LeCompte spoke on ice sheet density, how it is measured, how heat can be measured, and some of the effects the melting ice sheets could have on Elizabeth City. The students performed a GPS excersice where they had to record the longitude and latitude of four buildings on campus and the name of the building.
