On November 10, 2005, the Northeastern North Carolina Chapter of the IEEE-Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society held its Fall Distinguished Lecture Series with Dr. Janet Campbell of the University of Newhampshire in Durham, New Hampshire. Dr. Campbell is director of the Center of Excellence for Coastal Ocean Observation and Analysis (COOA) that was established in August 2002 as part of NOAA's Coastal Observation Technology System (COTS). Her presentation was titled "Ocean Color Remote Sensing ."

The Lectures Series was preceded by a meeting of the Northeastern North Carolina Chapter of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). Dr. Ali Khan, Dean of the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, greeted the guests and various individuals presented on a wide variety of topics. Some of these included:
